Virtual Interview: Dress for Success

As if interviewing isn’t already hard enough, many employers are shifting job interviews to be held virtually. While it’s hard to beat the convenience of interviewing from your living room, it can be hard to put your best foot forward when you aren’t in the same room as your future boss. With virtual interviews background, connectivity and, of course, your appearance are all important aspects to take into consideration. I’m all about individuality and expressing yourself through YOUR personal look, but in a job interview, the interviewer is more concerned about your experience, qualifications and compatibility with the company and role.
4 tips for video interview success:
- Neckline – Remember this is virtual and the camera only shows lower shoulders and up, so if your blouse neckline or button up shirt is showing skin past the camera, it might be a good idea to button a few more buttons.
- Colors – Colors already tend to look brighter on a screen so keeping it simple with solid color or patterned shirt with a solid blazer to contrast. Avoid colors that are too dark or too neutral, both of which will make you look washed out just like bright colors do. The colors you choose should complement your skin tone and add natural light to your complexion.
- Bottoms – Please, just wear some! I know it might be tempting to wear shorts or some cozy sweatpants but for the short interview, I cannot recommend normal pants enough. They don’t have to be a nice trouser with belt loops and pleats, but they should be a dark color and long enough, in case you had an emergency and had to stand or move.
- Hair – Comfort is first and foremost when it comes to your hairstyle! Whether it’s natural, styled or pulled back, just make sure you can see your interviewer and they can see you. Having wet hair or bed hair may cause you to fidget and has the appearance of being unprepared. You want to show them you are confident and well qualified for the position.
Whether you are interviewing for a construction company, accounting firm, retailer or etc. Do research about the company! Although their dress code may be less formal – always dress business professional to make a positive first impression!
